Oh, those are good eyes you’ve got!  Yep, that would be the famous Christ of the Ozarks, a/k/a Gumby the Redeemer, aa/k/a MC 900-Foot Jesus.

Toto, I don’t think we’re in New York City anymore… .

Good call, Fern.  It does indeed look like the view from Route 81, but it is, in fact, a certain resort town in a certain Natural State.

I hasten to point out that when Snow and I speak of Gumby the Redeemer, we are not harshing on Jesus, but rather, making gentle good humor about the, er, aesthetics of the Christ of the Ozarks statue.  It is meant to evoke the Christ of Redeemer statue over Rio de Janeiro, but the head and outstretched arms of the CotO statue are oddly flat.  I’ve heard tales that the reason the proportions are so odd is because the statue used to be even bigger, really towering over the hills, but it was interfering with the flight patterns of aircraft approaching the Fayetteville airport, so the sculptor had to reduce the size of the statue.  I’ve not been able to find corroboration for this, though, and I wonder if this was a tale invented by locals, to gently pull the pigtails of those silly Yankees staying at the Writers Colony.  smile

This should give you a better view of the statue, much better than my photo, which was taken from clear across town.

Ah, yes.  I believe that would be sourwood honey, indigenous to North Carolina.  It tastes—to me, anyway—like Tasmanian leatherwood honey, which is to clover honey as Tahitian vanilla beans are to Madagascar:  all of the same goodness, plus a floral headiness that would make you faint from sheer pleasure.
